Breathlessness

assessing longstanding breathlessness

Chronic breathlessness is a common presenting symptom with numerous causes. A delayed or inaccurate diagnosis may mean that you don’t receive appropriate treatment and can lead to deterioration unnecessarily.

Thus, an early and accurate diagnosis is critical to ensure the best outcomes are achieved. Patients without a diagnosis for breathlessness need an objective assessment including a face to face consultation to enable physical examination. The aim is to identify clear diagnosis(es), the clinical severity of the breathlessness, understand the impact on the individual and establish an appropriate management plan.

During our consultation, I will aim to diagnose the underlying cause of breathlessness and begin the appropriate treatment through a holistic approach.

There is rarely a single cause of breathlessness, therefore, multiple investigations are likely to be required.

An example of tests which may be required before beginning appropriate treatment:

  • Full blood count (FBC)
  • ECGs
  • Chest X-ray
  • Pulmonary function tests
  • CT Thorax

Once the underlying diagnosis has been identified, we will be able to pursue the treatment plan that is most suited to you. Please get in touch with me or my team to better understand how we can help you.
